9 Spaces to Promote Period Equity For Title IX

9 Spaces to Promote Period Equity for Title IX

June 23, 2022

June 23rd marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the historic law that Congress passed in June of 1972 as a part of the Education Amendments. It prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or other education programs that receive funding from the federal government. Since the landmark legislation passed, proactive efforts have been made to reduce or eliminate sexual-based harassment, discrimination, and violence for students across the country.

Title IX and Menstruation

While Title IX does not explicitly reference menstruation, Title IX intends to reduce disparities in educational equity and opportunity based on sex. Our opinion? This can CLEARLY be linked to menstruation because of the enormous impact that access to free and quality menstrual products has on participation and attendance in girls’ sports and educational programs. Title IX busted down the door for girls and women in sports, but plenty more windows and cabinets must be pried open.

Here are nine spaces we can further Title IX’s impact and legacy by offering period products

All School Bathrooms and School Offices

While states like Utah, Hawaii, and more have passed legislation requiring free period products in schools, most schools do not have accessible tampons and pads for menstruating students. Period products should be available in high-traffic bathrooms, locker rooms, and athletic facility bathrooms. Also, some menstruating students are often embarrassed by their periods, so having tampons and pads in offices is an excellent option for students looking for more discretion. Stadiums, Arenas, and Event Centers

Title IX forever changed the way girls and women approach and participate in the sports they love the most. When they aren’t competing themselves,  they deserve access to period products as fans. Stocking stadiums, arenas, and event centers with Aunt Flow products is a great way to promote inclusion and break the stigma of periods. We’ll whip up the perfect period product program for your favorite stadium!

Recreation Centers

Whether it’s pick-up games, organized scrimmages, or full-on competition, make sure your local rec center is prepared with tampons and pads. Keep the competition flowing and the period products stocked.

Transportation Services + Portable Toilets

Most people don’t think of team buses and porta-potties when it comes to menstruation, and that’s precisely the problem. These spaces are often overlooked, and menstruations start their periods in transit or at an isolated location without the products they need. Being prepared is the best thing you can do to help them!

First Aid Kits

Sure, you’ve got the bandaids, tape, and other necessities. But there’s no downside to throwing a few tampons into a first aid kit or medical bag for those last-minute emergencies. Check out our At Home Period Products for smaller orders.

We can’t wait to see the next 50 years of Title IX impact grow and evolve for girls and women all over the country. If you’re ready to start your journey towards menstrual equity, click HERE!

Let’s keep up the good work and band together to change the world, one cycle at a time!

Hi! I’m Claire. I founded Aunt Flow after getting my period in public without the supplies needed.

Founded in 2016, Aunt Flow is a certified WBENC women-owned company based in Columbus, Ohio. At 18 years old, I dedicated my life to developing a solution to ensure businesses and schools could sustainably provide quality period products, for free, in bathrooms. Our products are made with organic cotton (no weird stuff) and we are constantly working to reduce our environmental impact! For every 10 tampons and pads we sell, we donate 1 to a menstruator in need. I call this people helping people. PERIOD.®
