The City of North Miami is advancing menstrual equity with the launch of a citywide menstrual access initiative led by Vice Mayor Kassandra Timothe. In November 2024, the city passed a resolution to partner with Aunt Flow to provide free menstrual products, including pads and tampons, in public restrooms across municipal facilities.
By making these essential products available in public spaces, the initiative helps remove barriers for students, families, residents and visitors who may otherwise struggle to access period care when they need it. The effort also reflects the broader need for menstrual access: in Florida, 73% of female students in grades 7–12 attend Title I-eligible public schools, and nearly 1 in 4 students in the United States report difficulty affording period supplies.
No one should have to worry about access to basic menstrual products. This initiative grew from a moment of compassion shown by one of our City employees, Ms. Andrea McDonald, who stepped in and used her own benefits to support students in need. Her actions reminded us that small acts of kindness can lead to meaningful change. By expanding this effort across our public facilities, we’re making sure that support is available when and where it’s needed.

Through this partnership with Aunt Flow, North Miami joins a growing national movement to address period poverty and normalize menstrual product access in public spaces. Aunt Flow partners with thousands of municipalities, schools and organizations nationwide to help ensure period products are available to everyone who needs them.
North Miami is an incredible partner in the menstrual movement, helping ensure their community has access to these necessities. We know that period products in public bathrooms make a real difference—no one has to miss work or school when their period shows up unexpectedly. After all, if toilet paper is offered for free, why not pads and tampons?®
