When the time comes to restock our period care cabinet, many of us find ourselves reaching for those same old mainstream pad and tampon brands. The problem: Most of the big-name period product brands out there contain plastic, chemicals and other synthetic ingredients that are harmful to both your body and the environment.
Ready for a plastic-free period? Ditch your plastic applicator tampons and opt for Aunt Flow cardboard applicator tampons!
A Simple Switch With a Big Impact
We hear you… Cardboard applicators may not be everyone’s fave. But if you’re looking for a more eco-friendly, plastic-free alternative, you’ll want to consider making the switch to cardboard tampons. Our tampons are made from 100% organic cotton with a smooth petal tip applicator and concave grip for easy insertion and extra comfort.

Biodegradable + Compostible
While our tampons are made from natural materials that are inherently biodegradable, it’s important to understand the real-world limitations of biodegradation in modern waste management systems. Plastic applicators, however, are one of the most commonly found items in the ocean and on beaches. (This is why it’s important to NEVER flush period products down the toilet! Learn more about proper disposal here.)
In commercial settings, composting isn’t the best end-of-life option for used period products due to health risks and contamination concerns. Most composters, according to the Compost Manufacturing Alliance, don’t accept these items unless they have a specific certification. However, compostable packaging (like wrappers) could go in compost bins — with clear education to prevent contamination and ensure proper disposal.
Cutting Back on Plastic
Single-use plastics take a toll on the planet. Making the switch to cardboard applicator tampons is a great step to cut back on plastic! By using cardboard instead of plastic, you’ll be actively reducing your carbon footprint with each period.
Not a fan of tampons but still want to be sustainable? You can always try menstrual cups, period underwear or reusable pads!
Tips for Using Cardboard Applicator Tampons
Starting Out
If you’re new to the cardboard applicator tampon game, it’s important to keep in mind that they do not glide as easily as a plastic applicator. Cardboard is slightly more rigid than plastic, so be prepared for it to feel a little bit different at first. Unlike other cardboard applicators on the market, Aunt Flow tampons are designed to glide in more easily than others you may have used. I promise that you’ll get used to this quickly after a couple of times!

Side note: Inserting a tampon for the first time can be little uncomfy. Check out our step-by-step guide on how to make it the best experience possible!
Insert Gently
Place one thumb toward the base of the cardboard applicator and the other thumb toward the top of the cardboard applicator. You can then gently push the inner tube up into the outer tube to release the tampon. You may notice some resistance at first due to the grooves of the cardboard, and that is totally normal. Remember to relax and apply gentle pressure until the tampon is fully inserted.
Stay Calm and Don’t Rush Things
Remember, relax! Insertion can be tricky at first, so don’t worry if it takes you a few tries to get the hang of it. Always be gentle with your body and take breaks when needed.
