Let's Talk About Sustainable Bathroom Products

Let’s Talk About Sustainable Bathroom Products

April 21, 2022

We all remember reciting the 3 Rs as wide-eyed students celebrating Earth Day in our classrooms, mapping out in our heads how we would protect the environment while a dancing earth cartoon sang “Reduce, reuse, recycle!” in the background. We were each determined to do our part, no matter how small.

Fast forward to today, and you’re probably more likely to see a hoverboard on the street than a recycling bin. Ugh. BUT WAIT—we don’t want to let our 7-year-old selves down. We KNOW community-wide sustainability efforts are important, so why aren’t we seeing more of them? Where do we initiate these efforts?

Why not start with our bathrooms?

Let’s be real. So much goes on when we use a public bathroom that we rarely notice the products around us. We’re so focused on popping a squat before class or a weekly work meeting that we forget what kind of environmental impact we might be making. When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go. So what’s a fast, effective change that can be made? Simple:

Switch out wasteful period products for organic cotton alternatives.

OUT with the excessive materials and IN with Aunt Flow’s innovative, more sustainable bathroom product option!

Sustainable Period Products

Offer Aunt Flow

At Aunt Flow, we are not only helping menstruators, but we are actively helping the environment. Stocking your business or school bathrooms with freely-accessible period products empowers those with a flow and makes sense for your bottom line. Providing free products eliminates the anxiety menstruators feel when starting their periods in public (who has quarters on them anyway?) and dramatically improves the bathroom experience.

Now, let’s talk about sustainability…

FACT: Aunt Flow stocks restrooms with our organic and sustainable bathroom products, contributing less waste compared to other brands.

FACT: In 2021, we launched a new design for our pads to cut down on plastic. Our tampons are made with organic cotton and are completely plastic-free.

FACT: We’re Organic Content Standard (OCS) Certified!

Okay, but what is OCS certification?

The OCS quality assurance system is based on on-site inspection and certification of the entire textile supply chain (processing and trade). This is a thorough process that ensures genuinely organic products for customers!

Did you know that most pads and tampons aren’t made with cotton? Reducing waste in a period-positive way is super, but you also deserve to know the ingredients in your period products. Organic cotton products are safe for the body AND environmentally friendly. You can say goodbye to harsh manufacturing practices, rayons, synthetics and dyes. Not only is organic cotton eco-friendly, but it’s high-quality material you can trust.

Additional Benefits of Organic Cotton

Because it’s hypoallergenic, organic cotton is typically less irritable to people’s skin. With organic cotton products, we’re actively promoting fair working conditions. OCS-certified organic cotton means the people who create your fabrics are paid a living wage and fairly compensated for their hard work, as they should be. PERIOD.

Given that Aunt Flow’s products are degradable, great for the body, and the company gives back to the community, it made sense for us. We have a LEED Certified building, so we are always on the lookout for more efficient products. Our people love the product, and I have heard nothing but positive reviews on Aunt Flow. We have been stocking the products for nearly a year.

Hi! I’m Claire. I founded Aunt Flow after getting my period in public without the supplies needed.

Founded in 2016, Aunt Flow is a certified WBENC women-owned company based in Columbus, Ohio. At 18 years old, I dedicated my life to developing a solution to ensure businesses and schools could sustainably provide quality period products, for free, in bathrooms. Our products are made with organic cotton (no weird stuff) and we are constantly working to reduce our environmental impact! For every 10 tampons and pads we sell, we donate 1 to a menstruator in need. I call this people helping people. PERIOD.®
