The Growing Concern of Menstrual Sustainability

The Growing Concern of Menstrual Sustainability

March 2, 2023

What is Menstrual Sustainability?

Menstrual sustainability refers to the deliberate use of alternative menstrual products during one’s period that is better for the environment and body.

Menstrual Sustainability Definition

What is the Movement Toward Menstrual Sustainability About?

Menstrual sustainability is ALL about being mindful of menstrual products’ significant environmental impact on the planet.

Nearly 20 billion menstrual products are dumped in landfills annually in North America alone. In addition, landfills are the leading sources of methane emissions that contribute to climate catastrophes, according to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (“IPCC”)

Some tampon applicators and the plastic strip on the back of sanitary pads are made from LDPE (low-density polyethylene), a thermoplastic that can take CENTURIES to biodegrade. That’s why it’s imperative to consider the organization’s environmental footprint—and whether or not they’re taking a proactive approach to menstrual sustainability—when providing free period products to your employees or students.

At Aunt Flow, we’re committed to helping the environment. Our period products contribute less waste than other brands. How? We’ve purposely designed our pads and tampons to reduce the amount of plastic ending up in our landfills and oceans.

Hi! I’m Claire. I founded Aunt Flow after getting my period in public without the supplies needed.

Founded in 2016, Aunt Flow is a certified WBENC women-owned company based in Columbus, Ohio. At 18 years old, I dedicated my life to developing a solution to ensure businesses and schools could sustainably provide quality period products, for free, in bathrooms. Our products are made with organic cotton (no weird stuff) and we are constantly working to reduce our environmental impact! For every 10 tampons and pads we sell, we donate 1 to a menstruator in need. I call this people helping people. PERIOD.®
