Period products are officially tax-free in South Carolina!
On May 13, Governor Henry McMaster signed House Bill 3563 into law. The bill passed the House last year and was unanimously approved by state senators.
South Carolina’s standard 6% sales tax rate adds a few dollars every month to the cost of period products, creating a barrier to access for menstruators across the state, especially those in low-income areas who already struggle to afford these essentials.
Period products are the latest items to be exempt from sales tax in the state. The list already includes hearing aids, farm machinery, medicine, and medical supplies, along with dozens of others.
