Believe it or not, you can!
Swimming during your period isn’t a problem at all. Many menstruators have concerns about swimming while on their period, but with the right preparation and products, you’re good to go!
Tips for Swimming on Your Period
Choose the Right Period Product
- Tampons: Tampons tend to be the most popular choice when swimming during your period. Remember to insert a fresh tampon before swimming and change it every 4-8 hours. Your tampon won’t fall out if it is put in correctly, so go ahead and make a splash!
- Menstrual Cups: These silicone or rubber cups are reusable and collect your flow instead of absorbing it (like tampons). Menstrual cups are great for swimming because they can be worn for up to 12 hours and are leak-proof when properly inserted.
- Period Swimwear: Similar to period underwear, a period swimsuit is designed to be leakproof. Period swimsuits have built-in liners that absorb any leaks! They provide an extra layer of protection and can be worn alone or with a tampon or cup.
Comfort and Hygiene
- Rinse off before and after swimming to maintain hygiene and prevent irritation from chlorine or saltwater.
- If you’re using a tampon or menstrual cup, double-check that it’s inserted correctly to avoid discomfort or leaks.
