On July 3, the scientific journal Environment International released a study identifying that tampons (from several unnamed brands) may potentially contain heavy metals. The study quickly gained media attention and has since gone viral across many social platforms. Understandably, this has led to some confusion, concerns, and questions.
We take quality concerns very seriously and work closely with our primary supplier to ensure Aunt Flow tampons exceed industry safety standards.
Industry Study Overview
The study is believed to be the first body of research “to specifically measure metals” found in tampons. To conduct the study, researchers analyzed samples from 30 tampons.
However, it is still unclear⸺and health experts say unlikely⸺that the levels found would harm regular tampon users. It’s important to note that more research is still needed as this study did not assess the specific brands tested, risk levels, acceptable levels, or overall implications.
A recent CNN article references that little research has been done on chemicals in tampons. The authors of this small pilot study are not recommending you throw out your tampons!
I do not want people to panic, but to be aware that heavy metals have been found in these menstrual products. The next step is to do research that would show if the metals leach from the tampon into the body.
