Transylvania University Creates A More Inclusive Bathroom Experience

Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, is the latest university to improve access to period products and fight for menstrual equity by introducing Aunt Flow dispensers and products on their campus!

Before Aunt Flow

Ashley Hill, the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Student Wellbeing, was approached by the Student Government Association with the idea of providing tampons and pads for students. Utilizing a generous donor gift intended for women’s health on campus, Ashley and her team listened to these passionate advocates, and put that money to good use. They decided that with no current period product options on campus, they wanted to go with the flow – Aunt Flow.

Transylvania University’s Perfect Period Product Plan

Through positive word-of-mouth, Aunt Flow was recommended by other universities and schools, to Transylvania University as a company that could not only help with the nuts and bolts of adding period products to their school but also as a champion of menstrual equity and inclusion. Bringing Aunt Flow to their campus is a way to support menstruators and create a more inclusive space for transgender students.

“It was important to the students and our team that not only was Aunt Flow available in women’s bathrooms but also in gender-neutral and men’s bathrooms. We support and respect our transgender students and staff here and thought this would be the best way to show that,” Ashley Hill, Associate Dean of Students and Director of Student Wellbeing.

Following productive conversations with the Aunt Flow accounts and sales teams, here’s what Transylvania University added to its campus:

Transylvania University Program Overview:

  • Installation Date
    • December 2021 and January 2022.
  • Aunt Flow Period Product Plan
    • 10 Model E dispensers in women’s bathrooms + baskets in gender-neutral and men’s bathrooms.
  • Student and Staff Impact
    • ~500 student menstruators and 250 staff menstruators have access to period products.

The Results

Since the easy installation in 2021, the period products and dispensers have been a HUGE hit. Aunt Flow has been well-received by students, and the use of the products has been noticeable. They’re refilling the dispensers at least once a month and sometimes more frequently in high-traffic areas like the campus center.

They’re helping make the world better for people with periods!

What’s Next?

Presently, Transylvania University is enjoying its period product program, but after this resounding success, the university has goals of adding more Aunt Flow to its campus, including:

  • More Aunt Flow dispensers
  • Baskets in every bathroom
  • Partnering with Residence Life to place products in residence halls
  • Packs in offices for people not near a bathroom
  • Making them available in athletic departments

Altogether, Transylvania University has changed the game on the bathroom experience for faculty, students, and guests. If you’re interested in getting started on your journey towards menstrual equity, Ashley Hill recommends us:

“Working with Aunt Flow has been so easy. They have a great customer service team – it’s easy to get a hold of people, and I never felt pressured into ordering more or doing something we didn’t think was right for our school. We haven’t had a single issue in the 8+ months of having their dispensers. Aunt Flow is a great investment to show you care about the menstruators on your campus or your business!”

Hi! I’m Claire. I founded Aunt Flow after getting my period in public without the supplies needed.

Founded in 2016, Aunt Flow is a certified WBENC women-owned company based in Columbus, Ohio. At 18 years old, I dedicated my life to developing a solution to ensure businesses and schools could sustainably provide quality period products, for free, in bathrooms. Our products are made with organic cotton (no weird stuff) and we are constantly working to reduce our environmental impact! For every 10 tampons and pads we sell, we donate 1 to a menstruator in need. I call this people helping people. PERIOD.®
