In the summer of 2023, Mason Facilities installed Aunt Flow dispensers on the Fairfax, Mason Square, and Sci-Tech campuses. This was done in partnership with The Patriot Period Project, a student-run organization that provides free period products in a few locations on George Mason’s campuses.

This project began in the fall of 2022, with initial plans to only install a couple of units on the Fairfax campus. It soon expanded to 15 dispensers.
Almost immediately after installation, The Patriot Period Project started to receive feedback on their positive impact on campus.
We’ve heard so many positive comments about this project. Many students came to us saying how these dispensers saved their lives when they forgot their menstrual products at home as well.

Now, a total of 12 buildings on Mason’s campuses house Aunt Flow dispensers, proving to be a big step toward public health equity.

Having free menstrual products available on campus is so important for the well-being of our students and public health. My research has shown that many college students experience period poverty, and period poverty was associated with increased likelihood of reporting symptoms consistent with moderate to severe depression. Having these essential products provided at no cost can help alleviate stressors, whether financial and/or disruptions to school/classes for many students.
