This past spring, Algonquin College partnered with Aunt Flow to provide free period products in the Ottawa Campus bathrooms.
Aunt Flow dispensers, serviced by Citron Hygiene, are stocked with free tampons and pads to ensure that menstruators never have to miss out on activities or classes due to their period or need to sacrifice something else within their budget to afford period products.
Dispensers are available in 43 bathrooms on campus, including gender-neutral and some men’s restrooms.
Patricia Thome, supervisor of custodial and grounds operations, said the students have an essential role in supporting this project and each other.
We are thrilled with the feedback given by the college community, and it motivates us immensely. We still have work to do and are counting on the college community’s support while we continue developing this and other wonderful projects that are coming up.

According to statistics referenced by both the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario, 63% of menstruators has concerns about not being able to access either period products or proper hygiene facilities. The same research found that 34% of menstruators had dealt with budget/affordability issues.
AC believes in creating an accessible and equitable environment; if toilet paper and soap are freely accessible, period products should be too. By providing Aunt Flow period products we are doing our part to ensure the needs of our College community are met.
