Aunt Flow Love Your Menses

Q&A with Love Your Menses’ Co-Founder Bria Gadsen

By: Sami Sharfin

One of the major components of Aunt Flow is our Give-Back Program. In 2021, we donated over 1,600,000 period products to menstruators in need. Yet, this work wouldn’t be possible without our amazing donation partners, including Love Your Menses.

Co-founded by Dr. Ebere Azumah and Bria Gadsen in Boston, MA in 2019, Love Your Menses is a non-profit social impact organization founded with the goal of empowering menstruators of color regarding menstruation.

We recently caught up with Bria to highlight Love Your Menses’ incredible work in the menstrual movement!

What is the primary mission behind Love Your Menses?

We promote menstrual equity and build the next generation of leaders by providing an educational, uplifting and supportive space for Black and Brown girls and gender-expansive youth, women, and all people who menstruate to learn about the menstrual cycle and create equitable public health solutions.

What communities do you serve (either people or location-based)?

We work with Black and Brown girls and gender-expansive youth, women, and all people who menstruate in the U.S. (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, Texas, and Washington, D.C.), Nigeria, Liberia, Gambia, Kenya, Haiti, and Sao Tome and Principe.

How did Aunt Flow get involved with Love Your Menses?

In the summer of 2020, we received our first grant and used a portion of the funds to purchase menstrual products to support our Menstrual Education and Product Distribution outreach program. We believe in safe products- free of harsh chemicals that can negatively affect someone’s reproductive health or the environment, so as we were doing research on companies to purchase menstrual products from, we came across Aunt Flow.

Not only are Aunt Flow’s products eco-friendly and safe for the body, the customer service is also exceptional. We are grateful to have supported Aunt Flow through our business as well as receive support from Aunt Flow through their charitable giving efforts. We are excited to continue building a meaningful and impactful partnership with Aunt Flow, so that everyone who has a period can flow through life, unapologetically!

What is your proudest accomplishment with Love Your Menses?

We are most proud of the youth and young adults in our Understanding and Embracing My Flow, FlowTech4Girls, and Ambassador programs. We work with youth ages 8 and up; we are always amazed at their determination to be menstrual equity leaders and change agents in their communities.

Many of the youth and young adults who have benefited from our programs have accomplished many things, such as organizing period pop ups, advocating for free period product dispensers in their schools, creating educational content and leading workshops on the menstrual cycle for other youth, testifying at legislative hearings for menstrual equity-focused bills, and enrolling in college and medical school.

What are you looking forward to in the future?

We are looking forward to having youth continue to lead- not only in their communities, but also in our organization. We are excited to develop innovative and sustainable programs and initiatives to increase opportunities for Black and Brown youth and young adults to learn about their menstrual cycles, support other menstruators, and lead in whatever they aspire to be. Now and later, we will continue to support youth’s personal and professional development,

Is there anything else you’d like to mention?

Menstruation matters to all. Whether you are someone who menstruates or not, we need you in this movement to end period stigma and make menstruation equitable for everyone who bleeds. We are looking forward to working in partnership with communities worldwide to promote menstrual equity, and we thank Aunt Flow for being an active partner!

Hi! I’m Claire. I founded Aunt Flow after getting my period in public without the supplies needed.

Founded in 2016, Aunt Flow is a certified WBENC women-owned company based in Columbus, Ohio. At 18 years old, I dedicated my life to developing a solution to ensure businesses and schools could sustainably provide quality period products, for free, in bathrooms. Our products are made with 100% organic cotton (no weird stuff) and we are constantly working to reduce our environmental impact! For every 10 tampons and pads we sell, we donate 1 to a menstruator in need. I call this people helping people. PERIOD.®
